Power Posture
by Ann McGill
- Center, Ground, Balance
- Strengthen Sense of Self
- Increase Personal Power
Personal Power is determined by our mental attitudes.
We can increase our sense of inner strength and well being significantly
by learning to focus on the physical center within our bodies.
This exercise demonstrates this mind-body connection in a rather profound way.
Two people are needed to explore the technique.
One to serve as the “client” the other to do the testing.
Once learned, you can continue on your own.
Test Your Personal Power
Client stands, relaxed, hands at side.
You stand to the side facing their shoulder.
Place 2 fingers at the edge of the “client’s” shoulder.
Very slowly increase the pressure as you push against their shoulder.
Your aim is to discover how much strength it takes to push them over,
to get the person off balance, leaning to the side.
Note - This is not a game where the intention is to win.
What wants to be learned is how easy or difficult it is
to put the “client” out of balance.
If it is impossible to budge the person, if they are difficult to move,
this means they are physically connected to their source of power.
Their consciousness is grounded in the center of their body,
where it needs to be for optimum strength; physical and emotional.
If your clients topples over super easily, if they bend to the side,
it means their personal power is weak.
How easily they bend and topple measures their current
lack of personal power.
Experience Lack of Power
Now ask your client to imagine a bird flying high overhead,
to think up, to look up.
Repeat the gentle pushing against their shoulder,
very slowly increasing the pressure.
Most people will topple over.
That’s because their focus is far away from the center,
or balance point of their bodies.
Some people are not affected by looking up, or barely so
That’s because they are inherently quite centered and grounded …
at least as the moment. Or they’re not doing the exercise correctly.
Find your Center
To find your Center … the physical balance point within your body …
imagine putting a grape fruit in the middle of your stomach.
Now shrink it to the size of an orange, then a peach, a plum, a grape,
a raisin. Aim to make the focus point as small as possible, for that increases your power.
Notice, this power spot that floats within the core of your body is physically located approximately two inches below the navel.
Claim your Power
Focus on the spot 2 " below your belly button.
Touch your finger to this outside spot.
This will help you stay focused on the inward spot.
Bend your Knees
Be sure your knees are Not locked. They need to be fluid and flexible, as if prepared to react swiftly in an emergency.
So make sure you don’t overcorrect and lose strength by putting yourself into some sort of crouch.
Flex and Bounce
Do it gently. This will help you find that perfect knees-slightly-bent posture we’re suggesting for maximum strength and response.
Strengthen your Power
You now know how to test the strength of your inner power.
You now know how to make yourself stronger, more centered and grounded, mentally and emotionally.
Have you paused to notice how differently you now feel?
Do you perhaps feel a little more sure of yourself?
A little more solid in your body? Maybe your posture has improved?
Is your thinking a bit more clear? A little less cloudy?
These are just examples. The changes may be subtle, or significant.
Since change comes from awareness, it’s important to take time to notice and appreciate.
