  • Discharge Rage & Anger

  • Release Pent Up Energy

  • Break Through Depression

  • Access - Activate Inner Power

Unexpressed anger dis-empowers us mentally and emotionally, and can lead to physical illness.  Anger, adequately acknowledged and appropriately expressed, is a source of power.  It can provide the energy necessary to bring about desired change.

Many of us stuff our anger to such an extent we’re not even aware it’s what we’re really feeling, inside.  We hide the emotion from ourselves so we can hide it from others, ‘cause we’ve come to believe it’s not safe–appropriate–nice to express.  The more we hide and deny, the more the anger builds, the more we avoid giving vent for fear we might hurt someone, or ourselves.

Depression comes from repressing anger.  We get depressed when we hold back or stifle the natural free flow of energy.  An interesting phenomenon is that it is impossible to be depressed while shouting ragefully.  Try it, and you’ll see what I mean. You’ll feel much stronger, more alive, afterwards.

What’s needed is a safe way to get in touch with the anger that is really there.  Once we release the repressed energy, we are able to think more clearly, to communicate more effectively.  The Samurai Shove is a wonderful tool for getting in touch with these deeper denied emotions, accessing the power that we’ve been fearing and repressing.

Here’s how you do it.

  • Place your hands flat against a solid wall at about shoulder height.

  • Step back until you are leaning into the wall at about a 45 degree angle;

as if you were pushing a car stalled in the snow.

Bend your knees, and bring one knee–foot forward for balance.

  • Pretend the wall is the person or situation that has made you angry.

Push and shove against that wall–person–situation with all your might.

  • Imagine pushing so hard you break thro to the next room.  Keep shoving until, in your imagination, you’ve pushed them all the way out the side of the building … across the street … to the other side of town … out of state … out of your life.

  • While pushing the wall with all your might, allow yourself to rage and swear and express your full fury.  If there are people in the house, growl in your throat and mutter your angry thoughts.   The technique has its greatest impact, however, if you actually shout all the ugly words you can think of as loud as possible.

The more freedom we give ourselves to fully express, the more energy we release and expend.  This clears the cobwebs from our thinking and rejuvenates the physical body.  We are now better able to handle situations more appropriately.

Be aware - If your throat tickles or closes up when you shout or growl, it’s a sure sign you can significantly benefit from this exercise.  Tickling and tightening come from repression. Once you open up and give free voice to what wants to be said, coughing and hoarseness disappears.

Note - If this exercise feels too challenging, by all means cease and desist.  Don’t do it without facilitating support.  Consider beginning with the

“Sing into Silence” – “Peace–Power–Prayer Chant.”  [Coming soon].  It will help you open up your vocal chords, empowering your voice.

When we put our whole heart and being into the Samurai Shove, not stopping until we’ve released the pent up energy, a felt shift occurs.  It tends to be felt as a sense of excitement or success, a relaxing and letting go.  We feel stronger, more grounded, better able.  It takes only a few minutes … as you can quickly discover for yourself.
