McGill's Magic Question

1-Minute Fear Reduction Technique

Everyone experiences fear on occasion. It is not only normal and natural,
but essential to survival. The question is, to what extent does fearful
apprehension limit your life, and what are you doing to handle these difficult
feelings?

Some people are afraid of speaking in public, others of talking on the
telephone. Some people avoid heights, others bridges or tunnels. Whatever
your personal issue, to whatever degree you experience it, there are ways to
alleviate the feelings sufficiently to allow you to achieve desired results.

One such technique is "McGill's Magic Question " . The reason this approach is so powerfully effective is that it causes you to relax and release
emotional and physical tension. The special advantage of this technique is
that it can be used for almost any unwanted feeling; not just fear and anxiety,
but sadness, guilt and other types of emotional pain. (It does not work well
with anger, however.)

Here's how it works. Whenever you experience fear, or any other
unwanted feeling, ask yourself, " Am I willing to experience this feeling
for the next 3 to 5 minutes?" If the answer is yes (you must be honest
here), you will notice an immediate reduction of the feeling by at least 50%.
If the answer is no, you must accept you're not yet ready to let go of this
particular feeling. Try again another time.

If the feeling persists at a high level of discomfort, repeat the process.
Ask yourself McGill's Magic Question a second time. There will be another
50% decrease in the intensity of the feeling. In this way you will have
reduced its original intensity by 75%. The 25% that's left is something
anyone can live with.

The next time you experience fear or performance anxiety, unless you are
being chased by a tiger, stop and ask yourself "McGill's Magic Question" .
